Annette Funicello, then 13 years old, was found by Walt Disney in an amateur production of Swan Lake performed in Fullerton California. Funicello did not audition for her place in the Mickey Mouse Club and joined late into the first season of the series, much to the annoyance of their Mickey Mouse Club peers. Annette Sings Anka is the album that marked the beginning of her progress. It was perhaps the first rock-songwriter LP. Funicello was the lead in Beach Party, one of five films about beach parties that was a huge success. Most often, the film starred Frankie Avalon, these films are made by AIP however the scripts for every film were personally approved and read by Walt Disney to maintain Annette's clear image.
