O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. Her performance on the show impressed panel of judges and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges. However, she was a victim of significant loss in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. They were stunned at the result and exhorted the audience to support singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil was consistently giving stellar performance since then, never fell below the third place. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil advanced into the final two of the competition's contest, Werner reportedly forecast that morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became her third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil got a call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol immediately.
